Opening Day on Liberty Gulch

Opening Day on Liberty Gulch: A Milestone Ride on Mount Tam

Yesterday marked a historic moment for Marin County’s mountain biking community.

After decades of limited access, mountain bikers finally joined hikers and anglers in enjoying the Liberty Gulch Trail on Azalea Hill. This scenic route connects the Bullfrog Trailhead near Alpine Lake to Fairfax Bolinas Road, and for the first time ever, it's open to all.

For years, mountain bikers have dreamed of riding this stretch of trail. Advocacy efforts began nearly a decade ago, with our partners at MCBC championing Liberty Gulch as a key link in their Three Gaps initiative, aimed at connecting critical off-road routes across the county. More than just a beautiful ride, Liberty Gulch provides a car-free alternative to a narrow and high-traffic section of Fairfax Bolinas Road.

The effort to amend the Marin Municipal Water District's Roads and Trails Plan took years of persistence, planning, and partnership. But today that vision is reality, and Liberty Gulch is officially part of Marin’s trail network.

To celebrate, members of the Access4Bikes Trail Crew, our Board of Directors, and A4B supporters gathered for the first legal group ride on the trail. After putting in over 200 volunteer hours to make Liberty Gulch sustainable and safe for multi-use recreation, our crew got to experience the reward firsthand: flowing turns, epic views, and shared stoke.

We’re proud of this progress and grateful to everyone who made it possible. Most of all, we’re hopeful that this is just the beginning. With Liberty Gulch now open, we ride forward with sights set on more trail access, more connections, and more opportunities for all to enjoy Mount Tam on two wheels.
